What Is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)?

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental health condition that can significantly impact your ability to regulate your emotions. The loss of emotional control can lead to many maladaptive behaviors and life impairments.

Borderline Personality Disorder is one of the most misunderstood mental health conditions. Its symptoms are often mislabeled as attention-seeking or manipulative, leading to misdiagnosis or no diagnosis at all. This stigma can discourage people from seeking the help they desperately need. But BPD is treatable — and with the right support, individuals can live balanced, fulfilling lives.

Symptoms of BPD

Common signs and symptoms of BPD include:

  • Emotional instability and rapid mood swings
  • Impulsive or risky behavior (e.g., reckless spending, binge eating)
  • Intense fear of abandonment or rejection
  • Unstable relationships, often swinging between idealization and devaluation
  • Identity confusion and chronic feelings of emptiness
  • Self-harming behaviors or suicidal thoughts
  • Distorted thinking or perception under stress

These symptoms often feel overwhelming and exhausting and may lead individuals to isolate themselves or act out in efforts to feel safe or in control. Many people with BPD experience intense shame or fear around seeking help, but support is not only available, it’s life-changing.

What Causes Borderline Personality Disorder?

While there’s no single cause of BPD, research points to a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors. Many individuals with BPD have a history of early trauma, neglect, emotional invalidation, or disrupted attachment during childhood. These experiences can contribute to the emotional dysregulation and relational challenges that characterize the disorder.

Those struggling with BPD will typically experience intense emotions, fear of abandonment and rejection, mood swings, impulsivity, identity and self-worth issues, self-harm tendencies, and unstable relationships. They might try to manage these unstable relationships by exerting control or by abandoning their partners to avoid being abandoned themselves.

Unfortunately, people with BPD experience many issues in their relationships.

Unfortunately, borderline personality disorder is often misunderstood and goes undiagnosed. People often mistake its symptoms for other mental health conditions or even attention-seeking behavior. You might be struggling with this stress and discomfort, and experiencing all the negative impacts of borderline personality disorder, but are avoiding seeking a BPD outpatient program due to stigma or shame.

When to Seek a BPD Outpatient Program

It’s not always easy to recognize when help is needed, but the sooner you reach out, the better. If you’re experiencing any of the following, it may be time to explore treatment for borderline personality disorder:

  • Intense emotional reactions or difficulty managing anger
  • Persistent fear of rejection or abandonment that disrupts relationships
  • Impulsive behaviors that lead to self-harm or put you at risk
  • Chronic emptiness or deep feelings of low self-worth
  • A history of self-harm or suicidal thoughts
  • Struggles with substance abuse or trauma-related symptoms

If any of these symptoms sound familiar, mental health treatments can help. At Lake Point Recovery & Wellness, our BPD outpatient program in Arkansas provides a safe, structured space where you can stabilize emotionally, understand your patterns, and learn healthier ways to cope. We’re here to help you rediscover your sense of self and reclaim your future.

This place was great. I was with them for 5 months and they really went above and beyond with helping me. They helped with a place to live and they helped me to develop the tools I needed for continued success. Thanks to Lakepoint I am employed, in suitable housing, and working toward getting my kids back. I am a SOBER functioning member of society and for that I am eternally greatful. The real world is a tough place to be on your own, so if you need help getting sober and learning how to make it, this place is definitely the place to go.

Well, In my case I was really sick, broken would have been a understatement. But in my journey at LP I learned that somethings in life you can’t fix alone or even with self medication. The staff was genuinely concerned, the food was hot daily. The lessons where more about how to fix yourself from the inside first and to ask for help if ever you feel like it is too much. I’d like to especially thank Mrs. Jessica for being a great support a great advisor and now a great motivation for me. Thanks Lake Point for saving the life I had left and the new life I now live. Truly a blessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can BPD be treated without medication?

Yes, BPD can be treated without medication. Furthermore, the recommended path for treating borderline personality disorders is psychotherapy. Keeping in mind symptoms of BPD, a combination of evidence-based therapies, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), is likely to give the best results. Exceptions to this rule will be co-occurring conditions. Treatment centers for BPD and co-occurring disorders should include medications in their treatment plans.

What’s the difference between BPD and bipolar disorder?

Borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder have more differences than similarities. Because they both exhibit extreme mood swings, laymen may mistake them for one another. However,  BPD is a personality disorder, and other than unstable emotions, it’s also characterized by unstable relationships and self-image. On the other hand, bipolar disorder is characterized by periods of mania and periods of depression, and it is considered a mood disorder.

Can someone with BPD have healthy relationships?

Relationships are the biggest challenge for someone with borderline personality disorder. The fear of abandonment and impulsive behavior often draws many problems within the relationship, threatening to harm it. You can still have a healthy relationship if you learn to manage your BPD. By working on your issues during BPD outpatient program, you are helping both yourself and your relationships thrive.

Does Lake Point treat BPD in combination with addiction or trauma?

Lake Pointe Recovery & Wellness works with co-occurring mental health conditions. Whether your BPD is co-occurring with another mental health problem (like trauma) or substance use disorder, we can help you overcome this challenge. Co-occurring mental health problems require simultaneous treatment of both conditions, and our expert staff has much experience in it.
